Champ has been a fixture of Lake Champlain folklore since long before Vermont and New York agreed on much else, with reported sightings stretching back to the 19th century. Locals describe a long, serpentine shape moving just beneath the surface — enough to earn Champ legal protection and a permanent spot in regional lore.
