Shadow People
Seen only out of the corner of your eye. On purpose.
Shadow People are humanoid dark figures reported almost exclusively in peripheral vision — glimpsed standing in a doorway or at the foot of the bed, gone the instant you turn to look directly at them. The most famous variant, "Hat Man," shows up often enough across unrelated accounts to have earned his own nickname. Sleep researchers point to hypnagogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis as the likely explanation; the people who have woken up paralyzed with a shadow standing over them tend to find that only partially comforting.
