Mimics

Every hiking forum has at least one thread about it: something in the woods that can perfectly imitate a human voice — a friend calling your name, a child crying for help, a parent shouting from just past the treeline — luring people off the trail and into trouble. Unlike most single-origin cryptids, the Mimic is more of a shared modern legend, stitched together from real animal vocal mimicry (looking at you, lyrebirds), old hunting-camp warnings, and a healthy dose of internet-era campfire storytelling. The rule almost everyone agrees on: if a voice calls your name twice in the woods, do not go looking for whoever said it the first time.
