Duendes

Long before anyone in North America worried about Bigfoot, Spanish and Latin American households were already blaming missing socks and unexplained noises on duendes — small, sometimes hat-wearing trickster spirits said to live in walls, attics, and the deep woods. Depending on the region and the storyteller, a duende can be a harmless prankster, a jealous house-guardian, or something considerably less friendly if you disrespect its space. The common thread across centuries of retellings: do not leave milk out, do not whistle at night, and do not ignore three sharp knocks with nobody at the door.
